May Day at Massie
Massie Heritage Center will be celebrating May Day, the traditional welcoming of Spring, in Taylor Square. Students from numerous SCCPSS elementary schools will perform a variety of ethnic dances from around the world, including the traditional May Pole Dance. Students will also participate in the annual crowning of the May Day King and Queen. Massie’s neighbor on the square, Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, will provide the students with lemonade and homemade cookies following their performances. Prior to the dances, SCCPSS Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts, School Board President Roger Moss, and Friends of Massie President will give brief greetings to the audience. Combination Green-Meldrim House and St. John’s Church Tour with Refreshment on the Porch
Enjoy a tour of the Green-Meldrim House and St. John’s Church. Opening Reception and Lecture: Impressionism and Modernity
Come celebrate Telfair Museums’ 140th anniversary and enjoy an early preview of Impressionism and Modernity: French and American Painting. A dedicated lecture with Mary Morton will follow starting at 6:15pm in the auditorium. Mary Morton, head of French paintings at the National Gallery of Art, is a leading curator and scholar of 19th-century European art who has organized major international exhibitions and published extensively on artists such as Cézanne, Renoir, and Caillebotte. “The Seven Ladies” Opening Reception
Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) will present “The Seven Ladies”—an exciting new exhibition focused on the brave women who joined forces in 1955 to launch Historic Savannah Foundation, save the Davenport House and kick-start the city’s modern-day preservation movement—as part of HSF’s National Preservation Month celebration in May. The Seven Ladies” exhibit will combine historic photographs, archival materials and interpretative storytelling to explore the lives of each influential woman. Often grouped together, each woman, in fact, had her own unique perspective, special talent and leadership style that collectively shaped a pivotal moment in Savannah’s history. The exhibit will explore the personal histories, lived experiences and strong convictions of each woman and what compelled her to serve her community. Exploring Historic Savannah Foundation’s Early Saves Walking Tour
Join HSF’s Education and Research Associate Kendall Graham for a walk through Savannah’s early preservation history. Perfect for architectural enthusiasts, local history buffs or curious visitors, this one-of-a-kind tour will follow the path of HSF’s early preservation success stories, reveal lesser-known historical anecdotes about the city’s buildings and residents and explore the history of HSF’s Revolving Fund. The HSF Revolving Fund raises private money to purchase vacant, endangered historic properties and stabilize them before selling them to preservation-minded buyers. The proceeds from each sale goes back into the HSF Revolving Fund to purchase the next endangered property. Since its inception, the HSF Revolving Fund has saved more than 420 properties and serves as the national model for similar programs in cities across the county.
